Privacy Policy

OnlineQuiz ("we" or "us") runs onlinequiz.net, the OnlineQuiz desktop app and the multiplayer game server. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. Questions are welcome at support@onlinequiz.net.
What we collect
- Account details. Your email address, your password (we only keep a secure hash of it), your username, display name, avatar and time zone. If you sign in with Google, we also get your Google account ID, name and email address from Google.
- Your practice. The questions you play, your answers, scores and sessions, starred questions, review lists, settings, plugin data, trials and achievements. Signed in, this is kept with your account and synced between the website and the app.
- What you share. Friends and friend requests, leaderboards you make or join, clubs, teams and diagnostics, names you add for players without an account, question reports with their notes and your answer to that question, and names and chat messages in multiplayer rooms.
- Signed out on the website. A random visitor ID in a cookie, and the practice tied to it, so your progress is still there when you come back.
- Technical information. Your IP address and browser details reach our servers with every request. We use them to keep the service running, prevent abuse and limit how fast requests can be made. Our web server's logs include IP addresses and are kept for a limited time.
- Site statistics. We count visits, page views, sign-ins and answers each day for our own use. Visitors and accounts are counted as one-way hashes, not as IDs. We don't use third-party analytics or advertising.
How we use it
- To run the service, keep your account and progress, and sync it across your devices
- To show what you choose to share, like leaderboards, profiles, clubs and multiplayer rooms
- To send email you need, like account verification and password resets
- To fix problems, prevent cheating and abuse, and improve OnlineQuiz
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't use it for advertising.
What other people can see
- Your username, display name and avatar appear on leaderboards, on your profile, in friends lists, in clubs and in multiplayer rooms.
- Your practice totals and achievements show on your profile. If you leave the global leaderboard in your account settings, only your friends and the people on your leaderboards see them.
- Members of a club see each other's names and the club's diagnostic results. The club's settings decide who sees every player's report card.
- Anyone with a share link sees what that link shows. A friend link shows your name and username, a club or team link shows its name and its players' names, and a report link shows that report.
Who we share it with
We use a few companies to run OnlineQuiz, only for that purpose.
- Alibaba Cloud hosts our servers in Singapore.
- Resend sends our email.
- Google, if you choose to sign in with Google.
- GitHub stores our backups, which are encrypted before they leave our server, and hosts app and question database downloads.
- Cloudflare relays multiplayer games when our game server can't be reached.
We may also share information when the law requires it, or to protect people's safety or our rights.
Cookies and local storage
- qba keeps you signed in. It lasts up to a year and renews as you use the site.
- qbv is your visitor ID while you're signed out. It lasts up to two years.
- qbg holds a Google sign-in while it's in progress, for ten minutes.
Your settings are also kept in your browser's local storage. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
The desktop app
The app keeps your practice on your computer. Signed in, it syncs with your account. It contacts onlinequiz.net, updates.onlinequiz.net and GitHub to check for updates and download the question database.
How long we keep it
- Account information stays until you delete your account.
- Signed-out practice with nothing saved is removed after a week without use, and the rest after a year without use.
- Question reports are kept to help us fix questions.
- Server logs and backups are kept for a limited time.
Your choices and rights
- You can see and change your account details in Account.
- You can ask for a copy of your information, a correction, or deletion of your account by emailing support@onlinequiz.net from your account's email address. We reply within 30 days.
- If you live in California, California law gives you the right to know what personal information we have about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to not be treated differently for asking. We don't sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Children
OnlineQuiz is for quizbowl players at every level, including students. You must be at least 13 to create an account, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. A coach or club admin can add a player to a club by name only, without an account, to track diagnostics. Only that club sees it, and an admin can remove it. If you think a child under 13 has given us personal information, email support@onlinequiz.net and we'll delete it.
Security
We use HTTPS, store passwords as secure hashes, encrypt our backups and limit who can reach our servers. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
Where your information is processed
We're based in the United States and our servers are in Singapore. Using OnlineQuiz means your information is processed in those places.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top. For big changes, we tell you on the site or by email.
